Holy Synod
The Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is the highest spiritual authority, guiding the church in matters of doctrine, worship, and administration. Historically, the Ethiopian Church was closely connected with the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, from which it received its bishops for centuries until it gained its own Patriarchate in 1959. This bond reflects the shared heritage of Oriental Orthodoxy, rooted in the same faith and tradition, and continues to symbolize unity in preserving the ancient Christian faith.

His Holiness Patriarch
His Holiness Abune Mathias is the current Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, enthroned as the 6th patriarch and 63th Echege of St. Teklehaymanot in 2013. Known for his deep spirituality, humility, and lifelong dedication to the church, he has served in various roles including bishop and archbishop before his election as patriarch. Under his leadership, the church has continued to strengthen its spiritual life while addressing challenges facing the faithful both in Ethiopia and abroad. He is widely respected as a shepherd of peace, unity, and faith for millions of Orthodox Christians worldwide.
His Eminence Archbishop
His Eminence Abune Yacob, the Archbishop of UK, Ireland and Far East of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, serves as a devoted spiritual leader guiding the faithful in worship, teaching, and pastoral care. He works to preserve Ethiopian Orthodox traditions, strengthen community unity, and support the growing diaspora with faith and love.
