Meskel Celebration at St. Rufael and Abune Echege Yohannes Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Congregation
On September 27, our church family gathered with great joy to celebrate the Feast of Meskel, the Finding of the True Cross. The day was filled with prayer, song, and the warmth of fellowship, as our congregation honored one of the most cherished traditions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
The celebration began with the Divine Liturgy, where the church was filled with the sound of ancient hymns and the fragrance of incense. Worshippers came dressed in their white shamma and traditional attire, bringing with them a spirit of reverence and thanksgiving.
After the service, the congregation moved outdoors for the lighting of the Demera, the traditional bonfire that recalls the vision of Empress Helena. As the fire was lit, the smoke rose into the sky, reminding us of the divine sign that revealed the location of the True Cross centuries ago. People sang joyful mezmur, children clapped and danced, and voices of ululation echoed, adding to the beauty of the moment.
The celebration continued with traditional food, fellowship, and cultural expression. Families shared meals, children played, and members of the community reflected on the meaning of Meskel – the Cross as a symbol of light, victory, and hope.
It was truly a day of unity and blessing for our congregation. The Meskel fire reminded us that the light of Christ continues to guide us, and the joy of the day strengthened the bonds of love and faith among us all.
We thank God for allowing us to come together as one family to celebrate Meskel, and we pray that the blessing of the Cross will remain with our community throughout the year.
